Why should my child see a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists may be described as the “pediatricians of the oral cavity.” Pediatric dentists have received at least two to three additional years of residency education following dental school and are trained in managing medically complex patients and children and adults with special health care needs (SHCN). Pediatric dentists understand each child is unique, and they are dedicated to using appropriate behavior guidance techniques to foster positive dental experiences and encourage good oral health practices at an early age. Additionally, pediatric dentists may elect to pursue board certification through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). As the ABPD describes on its website, “A Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is a pediatric dentist whose credentials have been verified, who has successfully completed voluntary examinations, and who demonstrates specialized knowledge and skill.” Visit https://www.abpd.org/ to learn more about pediatric dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends an initial dental visit within six months of the eruption of the first baby tooth or by the child’s first birthday. At Camp Smile, we see children from infancy to twenty-one years of age.
